IPTV on Apple TV
Apple TV works well for IPTV, but the App Store selection is narrower than on Android and several suitable players are paid. This guide explains what to expect before you buy anything.

Check your Apple TV generation
Any Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K running a current tvOS release will work. The much older third-generation Apple TV cannot install apps at all and is not usable for this.
Open Settings, then General, then About to see the model and tvOS version. Update tvOS before installing a player.

Install a player from the tvOS App Store
Search the App Store on the Apple TV for an IPTV player that accepts an M3U playlist or a portal login. Expect fewer results than on Android, and expect some of the better-regarded options to carry a one-off charge.
Apple does not permit installing apps from outside the App Store on tvOS, so there is no sideloading question here at all. That is a security advantage.

Enter your details with the iPhone keyboard
When the Apple TV shows a text field, a notification appears on a nearby iPhone or iPad signed in to the same Apple account, letting you type with the phone keyboard. This is by far the easiest way to enter a long playlist address.
If the prompt does not appear, check that both devices are on the same network and that Bluetooth is on, or use the Apple TV Remote in Control Centre.

Let the list load and add favourites
Allow the first channel-list and guide download to complete before exploring. tvOS players are generally quick once loaded.
Set up favourites straight away. The Siri Remote is excellent for scrolling short lists and frustrating on very long ones, so trimming the list pays off immediately.

Check playback and buffering options
tvOS players expose fewer decoder options than Android ones, because playback is handled more tightly by the system. Where a buffer setting exists, raising it is the main adjustment available.
Apple TV boxes have strong hardware, so if playback is poor here the cause is almost always the network rather than the device. Prefer Ethernet on the 4K models that have a port.
What is different about Apple TV
Fewer players, generally better built
Apple's review process keeps the number of IPTV players low. The ones that exist tend to be well maintained, but you may need to pay for one. Factor that into your decision if you are choosing between an Apple TV you already own and a cheaper Android stick.
Players can be withdrawn
App Store availability changes, and a player you rely on can disappear from sale. Apps you have already bought normally remain installable from your purchase history, but this is a genuine consideration on tvOS specifically.
Excellent hardware, so blame the network
Apple TV 4K has ample decoding capacity. If streams stutter here, the useful diagnostic steps are all about the connection: run a speed test on the device, try Ethernet, and check whether the problem affects every channel or just one.
One subscription, several Apple devices
The same credentials work in an iPhone or iPad player alongside the Apple TV, within your plan's connection limit. Setting it up on a phone first is a quick way to confirm your details before configuring the television.
